MMI Engineered Solutions Successfully Completes
Aluminum to
Composite Conversion for U.S. Army Multiple Launch Rocket System
March 15, 2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Saline, MI, March 15 – The MMI ES Components Group, working with the University of Alabama on a development project for a critical weight reduction application for the Army’s Redstone Arsenal Command, delivered a major break-through solution for the Army's vital defense missile system.
“There are always challenges in any application when converting metal to plastic and we knew a composite conversion that performed as well as the current aluminum would be difficult,” said Tom Elkington, MMI ES’s Chief Technical Officer. “I am proud to say that in addition to MMI's new light weight solution dramatically outperforming the current aluminum component, it is 50% lighter and has reduced the current cost by 90%. This solution clearly demonstrates how our strategic alliance relationships with material compounders and R&D professionals combined with our expertise in engineering and investments in cutting-edge technology can achieve significant advances in lightweighting components."
The specialized composite matrix used to replace the current aluminum consists of a modified Nylon base combined with Long Strand Carbon Fiber technology. “The key was not just developing, but certifying a manufacturing process that repeatedly placed undamaged Long Strand Fibers throughout the part”, stated Mike Rosser, Applications Manager for the MMI ES Components Group. “Many companies can inject fibers, but often they are damaged and much weaker, it is usually slowly done by hand, resulting in high component costs. The strategic investment MMI-ES has made in cutting edge technology at our Saline production lab will accelerate the move by OEM component suppliers to lightweighting conversions of metal to composites."
This development for the U.S. Army reinforces the demand and opportunities in the application of composite materials. Virtually every manufacturing sector is looking for product enhancements and cost reductions that can positively impact their bottom line. This application shows how engineered solutions can help companies regain a strategic advantage in their marketplace.
